My girls, hard at work on their Explode the Code. They love it, which never ceases to amaze me, because the boys hated it. I’m glad I kept the boy’s unfinished books instead of selling them, since they seem to fill some inner need the girls have “do school.”
I do think Explode the Code was repetitive and unnecessary for the boys. On the flip side, it seems to strengthen Rachel’s reading skills and Prairie’s recognition of sounds. I’ve been working with Prairie to get her to automatically say the letter sound instead of the letter name when I flash her a letter card. As soon as that habit is down, we will work on putting some sounds together for her. She will be 3 in about a week and a half. I never, never would have tried to teach reading so early to the boys. I’m not sure if it is because the boys just weren’t ready or because they are just “wired” differently from the girls and I had not learned how to teach to their learning style.
It is strange and fascinating to see how they learn so differently.
